I’ve recently posted “Basic Interview Tips“; which seemed to get a good response from current job seekers.
So… the interview is over. What are you supposed to do besides wait?
1. Send a thank you card to the interviewer. Be certain to get a business card before or after the interview. This will guarantee correct address and spelling of their name.
It should appear like this:
Attn: Name of Interviewer
Address and Street name
City, State and Zip
2. The most appropriate time to follow up with the hiring manager or HR representative is about 3 to 4 days (but also depends upon their timeline for filling the position). Phone is better, but email is also okay. Start by thanking them for their time and express interest in the position. Do not demand anything – simply request an update from them regarding the status of the open position.
3. Then you wait. During this time remember that you will ultimately end up in a place that is the right fit for you. God has a plan for you! Do not forget that.
Unfortunately we are not always guaranteed to get a position that we feel is the best fit for us. Companies will go with the best candidate with the most relevant experience and the best investment of their money.
If you are not offered the job, there are steps that you can take. These actions will show the company that you’re interested in them.
They might contact you by phone or email to explain the position has been filled. Though it’s disappointing, it does not necessarily mark the end of the road.
After interviewing for a position at a school supply company, the hiring manager called me. She explained that I was the “runner-up” but did not get the position. Of course I was disappointed. I expressed thanks for her time and requested if I could contact her directly if another position becomes available. She agreed.
This is called networking within the company. I did end up interviewing at the company for 2 other positions. Eventually I found the right fit at the company and was hired.
The technique is crucial if you feel that you’ve found a great company to work for but did not yet find the right position. Patience and motivation is key.
Stay focused. Do not lose hope. Be persistent. Keep your eye on the prize. Don’t give up.
“I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” – Philippians 3:14 (NIV)
